Hard metal manufacturing

Since 1987, we have been producing hard metal components in our own metallurgical department. We have systematically documented all our experience right from the outset. We achieve the perfect quality of our heavy metal by consistently drawing on this experience. The batches are analysed in the laboratory and the measured values are recorded. The classic production process is as follows:

Powder – pressing – moulding – sintering.

Powder

We can influence the composition of the three basic materials tungsten carbide, cobalt and nickel – and therefore the type of hard metal – according to your requirements. The ingredients are mixed by our supplier according to specifications and held together by a binding agent.

Pressing

The powder is then manually pressed into bars or rods under high mechanical pressure or mechanically pressed into blanks using pellets (moulds). Our stock of pre-sintered pellets significantly shortens the production process and allows us to achieve very short delivery times in an emergency.

Moulding

The workpieces can now be subjected to initial machining: grinding, drilling, etc. giving them their functional properties at this stage.

Sintering

Sintering is the most important and most demanding manufacturing step. Under high pressure and temperatures of up to 1400° C, the cobalt melts and bonds with the tungsten carbide. During this process lasting for hours and taking place in phases, the blank can shrink between 25 and 50%.

At temperatures of around 900° C, the workpieces acquire a certain density and strength for further processing. Since the particles of the starting material become denser and pore spaces are filled, a calculable shrinkage takes place.

The parts undergo the final sintering process under vacuum and at around 1400° C. They have now reached the typical hardness for hard metal and, depending on the customer’s requirements, are ready for delivery or further processing in our factory.
